Why such a huge difference?

Because the words “kitchen remodel” can describe completely different projects.

Replacing countertops and painting existing cabinets is technically a kitchen update.

Removing walls, redesigning the layout, replacing cabinetry, adding an island, relocating appliances, changing plumbing and electrical, installing new flooring and lighting, and selecting new countertops, tile, fixtures, and appliances is something entirely different.

Before focusing on a number, it's much more helpful to understand what goes into the cost of a kitchen remodel.

What Type of Kitchen Remodel Are You Planning?

Most kitchen projects fall somewhere along a spectrum.

Cosmetic Kitchen Update

A cosmetic update keeps most of the existing kitchen intact.

It might include:

• New countertops
• New backsplash
• Updated cabinet hardware
• New lighting
• A new sink and faucet
• Paint
• Possibly new appliances

Because you're keeping the cabinetry, layout, plumbing locations, and most of the existing room, this is naturally going to cost much less than a full renovation.

Cabinetry Replacement

The next level may involve replacing the cabinetry and countertops while keeping approximately the same kitchen footprint.

Even when the general layout stays similar, this gives us an opportunity to improve storage, drawer configurations, pantry organization, trash and recycling, appliance locations, and other details that can make the kitchen function much better.

Cabinetry is often one of the largest components of a kitchen remodeling budget, and the cost varies significantly depending on the cabinet construction, finish, door style, interior accessories, modifications, and level of customization.

Full Kitchen Remodel

A full kitchen remodel goes much further.

This may include:

• A redesigned layout and new cabinetry
• Countertops, backsplash and flooring
• New lighting, plumbing and electrical work
• Appliances, sinks, faucets and ventilation
• Specialty storage, construction and installation

At this level, we're no longer simply replacing what was there. We're asking a much more important question:

If we're going through the time and expense of remodeling this kitchen, how can we make the space work significantly better for the way you actually live?

That's where professional kitchen design can make an enormous difference.

What Makes a Kitchen Remodel Cost $100,000—or More?

This is where online remodeling calculators often become misleading. An extensive custom kitchen can easily move beyond the ranges shown on generic cost websites because there may be far more happening than those calculators account for.

Some of the biggest cost drivers include:

Changing the Floor Plan

Removing or relocating walls can completely transform a kitchen, but it may also involve structural work, drywall, flooring repairs, electrical changes, HVAC modifications, and other construction. Expanding a kitchen into an adjoining dining room or underused area can create a dramatically better space, but that's very different from simply replacing cabinets within the existing footprint.

Cabinetry

Cabinetry isn't simply a row of boxes on the wall. Thoughtful cabinetry design can incorporate pantry storage, deep drawers, spice and tray storage, waste and recycling centers, concealed appliances, customized inserts, specialty hardware, and storage designed specifically around the homeowner.

Those details affect cost, but they're also some of the features homeowners interact with every single day.

Appliances

Appliances can have an enormous effect on the overall project. There is a major difference between a standard appliance package and a kitchen incorporating built-in refrigeration, induction cooking, wall ovens, beverage refrigeration, integrated dishwashers, specialty appliances, or panel-ready appliances designed to disappear into the cabinetry.

Countertops and Tile

The amount of material matters just as much as the type. A kitchen with a large island, perimeter countertops, full-height quartz or stone backsplashes, waterfall ends, or additional pantry or scullery countertops will naturally require more material and fabrication.

Plumbing, Electrical and Lighting

Moving a sink, dishwasher, refrigerator, cooktop, or oven may require changes behind the walls and under the floor. Today's kitchens can also require considerably more electrical planning, including recessed lighting, decorative fixtures, undercabinet lighting, outlets, charging areas, and dedicated appliance circuits.

These aren't necessarily the glamorous things you notice in the finished photographs, but they are essential parts of a successful remodel.

A Real Harrisburg Kitchen Transformation

One of our favorite examples is an award-winning kitchen and scullery project here in the Harrisburg area. The original kitchen occupied only part of the available space, and by rethinking how the adjoining rooms were being used, we were able to create an entirely new kitchen layout along with a hidden scullery.

The finished space included a large island, custom storage solutions, integrated appliances, specialty cabinetry, a concealed entrance into the scullery, extensive countertop and backsplash materials, and numerous details designed specifically around how the homeowners wanted to use their new kitchen.

This wasn't simply a cabinet replacement. It was a complete transformation of how the homeowners used that portion of their home.

The project went on to receive First Place and Judges' Choice in the $150,000+ Kitchen category at the 2025 NKBA Susquehanna Valley Chapter Design Awards.

While not every kitchen needs—or should have—that level of investment, it's a great example of why comparing every “kitchen remodel” using one average price isn't particularly useful.

Where Should You Spend—and Where Can You Save?

One of the most important parts of professional kitchen design is helping homeowners determine where their money will make the biggest difference.

Sometimes a homeowner initially thinks something has to move when there's actually a better solution that allows us to keep plumbing or construction in place. Other times, spending additional money to remove a wall or relocate an appliance can completely change the functionality of the room and may be well worth considering.

There are also opportunities to balance selections throughout a project. A specialty cabinet feature may be extremely important to you, while another area can be simplified. You may choose to invest more heavily in cabinetry and countertops while selecting a moderately priced backsplash tile.

The goal isn't to spend the most money.

The goal is to spend your remodeling dollars intentionally.

Why Design Should Come Before the Construction Quote

One of the biggest mistakes homeowners can make is trying to determine the cost of a remodel before anyone has actually determined what is being remodeled. A contractor can only accurately price what has been defined.

Until we know the layout, cabinetry, materials, appliance requirements, plumbing changes, lighting plan, construction scope, and level of finish, any early number is going to involve assumptions.

That's why we prefer to start with the design. Once the project has been thoughtfully planned, we can make much better decisions about where to invest, where to simplify, and what needs to be included to achieve the finished space you're imagining.

Thoughtful planning can also help prevent costly changes once construction is already underway.
